05-23-11 – Miami, FL>Orlando, FL – Guitar, Bass, Drums and Female vocalist looking to add a keyboard player .
OK, here’s the simple rules. (Man, I hate rules… but ok, let’s see what this guy wants)
1st, Just be fairly proficient. We’re not looking for a Garcia, Beck, Clapton or Steve Winwood, (unless he’s not too busy). Your attitude is more important. Seriously.
We’re all easy going and believe it’s important that you enjoy yourself. Making music should be fun as well as work.
In other words, leave the “it must be played this way”, or the “I’ve been playing for 40 years and this is how it’s done”, or the “my old group always did it like this”
or other such ego issues at home. Just play and be open minded to hearing an old favorite sound the way WE want to play it.
If you’re not having fun playing, it will show in your music and it will show on stage. Remember, this is a GROUP, not a bunch of individuals.
2nd. You don’t need to have a voice like Steve Perry but you do need to be able to carry some vocals. If you can’t or don’t sing, I’m afraid it won’t work for us.
Just be good enough to at least stay on key. Being able to harmonize wouldn’t hurt either.
3rd. What I am trying to do is not find someone to join “MY” band, but someone to become part of “OUR” group.
While we are basically a cover band, we are trying not to be a “copy” band.
Whenever possible, we try to play songs in our own style and put a unique spin on them.
My philosophy at this point is: We will play what we like and what makes us happy. Hopefully, people will like what we’re doing and listen to us. If not, they can go listen to a different band. This is not a unique or ground breaking idea. It’s the same attitude as every original big name band that’s ever been.
(Have you ever been to a concert, yelled out “play this or that” and the band did it?.. I thought not)
Simply put, there are no standard tunes (dance or otherwise) that must be played. There is only what we want to play. TRUST YOUR OWN TALENT AND TASTE!
We play an eclectic mix of Classic Rock, R & B, Funk and even a few Jazz numbers. No Sweet Home Alabama or Freebird for us. We are not southern rockers!
Hopefully you have a creative side and like to play things in your own style. You probably have some favorite songs you really like playing. We encourage both.
While we already have a catalog of close to 60 songs, (you will eventually be expected to learn or know a lot of them over time) we are open to adding (or detracting) new tunes. There’s too much material out there to stress over any 1 song. Don’t be so thin skinned if a song you suggest is rejected by someone, it happens all the time.
4th. And finally. We may be a relatively new group but we’re not new players.
All of us are at least 50+. We pretty much all reside in the South Palm Beach area. (Boca Raton would be the central point).
Showing for rehearsals and practicing on your own should not be considered a job or a chore, it should be what you really want to be doing.
Again, I can’t say this enough. Your attitude towards making the band a success and getting along with the others is more important than being the best player out there.
I know this was long, but it will save all of us a lot of time if you don’t share the same ideology. — Submit Yourself To This Role Now: 1
