10-07-11 – Seattle, WA>Portland, OR – Hello. I am interested in putting together a jazz trio for a project I have been working on for a few months playing largely the music of the Jimmy Giuffre Trio (featuring Jim Hall on guitar…or me for now). The original recordings have Jimmy Giuffre (clarinet, Bari, and Tenor sax), guitar, and upright bass. The group is described as “blues based folk jazz”. Id say thats pretty accurate. I already have 7 complete charts of their arrangements (complete transcriptions…bass lines, solos, chord changes, etc). I would like to put a group together that focuses first on learning these arrangements and then…finding decent gigs.
From the reed player, you should be able to double on most of these instruments (though I dont care as much about Bari as I do clarinet). The upright player should have great time, as this is a no drums gig. Playing changes clearly and eventually working up to some nice counterpoint improvisations is the end idea. Hopefully you are well familiar with this group already. If not…? check them out. One of the coolest groups not talked much about.
I have put alot of time into these arrangements, mainly because I think they would be fun to play…AND theoretically it would be a good format for finding some lucrative gigs. Now all thats missing is the right players. I plan on writing out a few more as well in hopes of getting a few sets together.
