Walt Whitman, who for most of his life promoted his work assiduously, is now an old man, so the promotional task has fallen to a young friend and disciple, Horace Traubel, who seeks the old poet‘s love even as he spreads his fame. But, Horace is frustrated by Walt‘s reticence, which derives both from his age and from the painful ending decades ago of his only great love, an event with which he has still not reconciled himself.
